Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon
The Lowdown
The Islandsbanki Reykjavik Half Marathon continues the long tradition of running festivals in Iceland’s capital, growing from a local athletic event into an internationally attended race that showcases Reykjavik’s compact, dramatic cityscape. Held in late August to take advantage of mild summer weather and long daylight hours, the event builds on decades of local running culture and community support. While the Reykjavik Marathon races have varied sponsors over the years, the Islandsbanki-backed edition emphasizes accessibility for recreational runners and competitive athletes alike, and the half-marathon distance has become a staple for visitors seeking a scenic, fast urban course with a Nordic atmosphere. The course threads together Reykjavik’s most striking sights: a largely flat, fast route that runs along the coastline with sweeping views of Faxaflói Bay and nearby islands, passes the contemporary glass façade of Harpa Concert Hall, skirts the colorful streets of the old town and then climbs briefly toward the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church before returning toward the sea. Runners pass through residential neighborhoods, seaside promenades and sections of Laugardalur park, offering a mix of ocean vistas, volcanic skyline and friendly local neighborhoods. The route is measured and staged to provide clear signage, punctual aid stations and a lively finish area with music and Icelandic hospitality. Atmospherically the race balances high-energy support zones and community volunteers with the relaxed, outdoorsy spirit of Iceland — spectators are enthusiastic but not overwhelming, and the event draws a mix of local club runners, international visitors, and first-time half-marathoners. Race-day logistics are runner-friendly with efficient packet pickup, English-language information, and post-race facilities that highlight local food and culture. The Reykjavik race courses are AIMS-certified and measured to World Athletics standards, ensuring accurate distance and reliable results for athletes tracking personal bests and qualifying efforts.
