The Lowdown

The Maratón de la Ciudad de México Telcel is one of Latin America’s longest-running major marathons, tracing its modern lineage back to the early 1980s and growing into an internationally recognized city classic. Held annually in the heart of Mexico City, the race has become a showcase for Mexican distance running and a magnet for international athletes seeking a culturally rich urban course. Over decades it has expanded from a local celebration to a major mass-participation event that highlights Mexico City’s history, resilience and passion for running. The course threads together many of the capital’s most iconic vistas — the historic Centro Histórico, broad boulevards of Paseo de la Reforma, the leafy expanse of Bosque de Chapultepec and monumental civic sites — offering a continually changing panorama of architecture, parks and public art. Runners should expect the unique challenge of Mexico City’s high altitude (around 2,200–2,300 meters / ~7,200 feet), which makes the race tougher physiologically while rewarding well-prepared athletes. The route is known for its energetic spectator support, live music along the way, and festive neighborhood fiestas that create an electric atmosphere from early morning through the finish. The event is organized to international standards and is AIMS-certified; it has traditionally been recognized as a Boston Marathon qualifying course, making it attractive for athletes aiming for fast times despite the altitude. Race-day logistics, clear course signage and strong volunteer support contribute to a smooth runner experience, while expo events and cultural programming in the days around the race enhance the overall festival feel for participants and accompanying family and friends.

The Maratón de la CDMX Telcel is run at high altitude (~2,250 meters / 7,380 feet), making it one of the more challenging major city marathons due to thinner air and reduced oxygen availability.

The course passes many of Mexico City's iconic landmarks including Paseo de la Reforma, the Zócalo, Monumento a la Revolución and offers a finish in the historic center, providing scenic and cultural highlights throughout the route.

Finishers receive a commemorative medal and a technical finisher shirt, and the race weekend includes an official expo with bib pickup, sponsor booths, and a race pasta dinner available the night before for registered participants.

Aid stations with water, electrolyte drinks and sponges are spaced roughly every 2–3 kilometers along the course, and there are dedicated medical tents at multiple points as well as official pace groups for common goal times.

Expect road closures and limited parking around the start and finish areas—organizers recommend using public transit or team buses, and there is a well-organized baggage drop and clearly marked spectator viewing zones near major landmarks.
