Maratón Internacional de Buenos Aires
The Lowdown
The Maratón Internacional de Buenos Aires is Argentina’s premier long-distance road race and a highlight of the South American racing calendar. Held annually since the 1980s, the event has grown from a national competition into an internationally recognized marathon that attracts elite athletes and recreational runners from around the world. Its long history and reliable organization have made it a key autumn target for athletes seeking fast times, international competition and a chance to experience Buenos Aires’ unique urban culture. The course is a predominantly flat, fast loop through Buenos Aires’ most iconic neighborhoods and landmarks, offering runners scenic riverfront stretches and vibrant city vistas. Participants pass the Obelisco and Avenida 9 de Julio, run along the refurbished docks of Puerto Madero, weave through the colorful streets of La Boca and Caminito, and enjoy the green boulevards of Palermo and the upscale avenues of Recoleta before finishing near the waterfront. The race atmosphere is electric: lively crowds, live music at aid stations, local cheer squads and a carnival-like energy that carries runners across the line. The Maratón Internacional de Buenos Aires is AIMS-certified, a World Athletics Silver Label race, and recognized as a Boston Marathon qualifying event, making it both a culturally rich experience and an attractive choice for athletes chasing personal bests and qualification standards.
