Maratón Internacional de Mar del Plata
The Lowdown
The Maratón Internacional de Mar del Plata — known as 'La Carrera del Mar' (The Race of the Sea) — is Argentina's second-most attended marathon and one of the most scenic road races in South America. The coastal course runs along the dramatic Atlantic waterfront of Mar del Plata, starting near the grand Casino Central and tracing the iconic Boulevard Marítimo with the ocean as a constant companion. Runners pass Playa Grande — one of the city's most famous beaches — the historic Torreón del Monje watchtower, and the Banquina de Pescadores where a colony of sea lions basks on the rocks, providing one of the most unusual marathon spectacles anywhere. Now part of New Balance's Race Series, the event draws approximately 8,000 runners and benefits from excellent coastal weather in November — late spring temperatures of 12-20°C are ideal for marathon running. The route features gentle undulations following the coastal terrain but remains largely flat and fast. Mar del Plata's identity as Argentina's premier beach resort city adds a holiday atmosphere to the race weekend, with fresh seafood restaurants, lively boardwalks, and affordable oceanfront hotels. A medical certificate is required for all participants, and the event's growing international profile is attracting more overseas runners each year.
