Maratón Puebla
The Lowdown
Maratón Puebla traces its roots to the growing running tradition in Puebla, showcasing the city’s rich colonial heritage and festive spirit. Typically held in late November, the race starts in the Zócalo of the Centro Histórico and has become one of central Mexico’s premier fall marathons, attracting a mix of elite athletes, national competitors and recreational runners. Over the years it has gained recognition for its well-organized logistics, vibrant support from local authorities and volunteers, and dependable race-day services that make it a popular target for athletes seeking a fast, scenic urban course. The course highlights include an opening loop through the cobblestone streets and wide plazas of the historic center—past ornate churches, tiled facades and the Catedral de Puebla—before moving onto broad boulevards and modern avenues that reveal views of the Puebla valley and the looming silhouette of Popocatépetl on clear days. Runners experience a blend of challenging altitude (Puebla sits above 2,100 m), occasional cobbled sections, and long, runnable stretches that favor steady pacing. The atmosphere is distinctly Mexican: lively bands and mariachis at several points, enthusiastic neighborhood crowds, and aid stations offering water, isotonic drinks and local snacks. The event is organized on an AIMS-certified course and is listed as eligible for Boston Marathon qualification, making it attractive for athletes chasing qualifying standards.
