Maratón Internacional de Asunción
The Lowdown
The Maratón Internacional de Asunción (MIA) is Paraguay's only World Athletics/AIMS-certified marathon and the country's flagship road race. First run in 2010 as a test event ahead of Paraguay's bicentennial independence celebrations, it has been held annually since by the Paraguay Marathon Club and the Paraguayan Athletics Federation. The race starts before dawn (5:30 AM) at the Muelle Deportivo on the Costanera de Asunción, a riverside promenade along the Paraguay River in the capital. The marathon course covers three laps of a 14.065 km riverside circuit (the half marathon runs two laps of the same loop), keeping the route flat, fast, and spectator-friendly with repeated views of the Bahía de Asunción and the city skyline. MIA anchors the international "Mega Finisher" running circuit spanning five South American countries and draws a mix of Paraguayan club runners and international travelers seeking a South American country marathon.
