Monterey Bay Half Marathon
The Lowdown
The Monterey Bay Half Marathon has grown into a beloved coastal road race and a local favorite for more than a decade, drawing runners from across California and beyond to the Monterey Peninsula each November. While modest in scale compared with major city marathons, the event has become known for its dependable cool-weather timing, well-organized aid and volunteer support, and a community-driven spirit that highlights the region's maritime and conservation heritage. The race serves both competitive runners seeking fast times and recreational participants out for a scenic, celebratory run. The out-and-back course showcases some of Monterey's most iconic shoreline scenery, with stretches alongside the blue waters of Monterey Bay, views of rocky headlands, and glimpses of sea birds and occasional seals. Runners pass through charming districts such as Cannery Row and the Old Fisherman's Wharf area, with portions of the route offering panoramic vistas of the coastline and the Point Pinos lighthouse. The atmosphere is festive but relaxed — local bands, cheer stations, and enthusiastic crowds create a supportive environment, and the cool November climate typically provides ideal running conditions. The course is USATF-certified and organized by the Big Sur Marathon Foundation.
