Patagonian International Marathon
The Lowdown
The Patagonian International Marathon is a relatively young but quickly iconic event in long-distance trail running, conceived in the 2010s to showcase the raw, windswept beauty of Torres del Paine. Held in the commune of Torres del Paine, Chile, the race draws international runners seeking an expedition-style marathon rather than a fast road time. Its growing reputation comes from staging a true Patagonian experience: unpredictable weather, remote access, and the chance to run amid some of South America’s most dramatic mountain scenery. The course weaves through lenga forests, across gravel service roads and single-track trails, and along lakeshores with sweeping views of the Paine Massif, including the famed granite towers, glaciers, and turquoise lakes. Runners encounter varied terrain and significant elevation change, with panoramic viewpoints over Lake Pehoé and the Grey Glacier area offering unforgettable photo-worthy moments. The atmosphere is intimate and adventurous rather than crowded — aid stations are well-run but spaced, volunteers are enthusiastic, and fellow competitors are supportive, creating a camaraderie born of shared hardship and wonder. Wildlife such as guanacos and condors are often sighted, enhancing the wilderness feel. This event is organized as a trail/mountain marathon and is not AIMS- or World Athletics-certified; it is not a Boston Marathon qualifying course. Instead, it is celebrated by the trail-running community for its challenge, scenery, and logistical uniqueness, attracting runners who prioritize experience and adventure over personal bests.

The course runs through Torres del Paine National Park with dramatic views of granite towers, glaciers and Patagonian steppe, featuring a mix of singletrack, gravel farm roads and short paved sections.
Runners should expect strong, variable winds and rolling hills — dressing in layers and carrying a windproof shell is strongly recommended; trekking poles are allowed for personal use.
Finishers receive a technical race shirt and a custom finisher medal, and the event provides aid stations roughly every 4–6 km stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, bars and fruit plus medical support and course marshals.
The race operates with limited field size and scheduled shuttle service from nearby Puerto Natales; awards are given to top overall finishers and standard age-group categories, and participants are required to follow strict Leave No Trace rules inside the national park.
