The Lowdown

Run Rome The Marathon traces its modern roots to the long tradition of marathon running in the Eternal City and has grown into one of Italy’s most picturesque spring races. Attracting both elite competitors and large international fields, the event celebrates Rome’s history and running culture with a festival-like atmosphere that blends serious sport and tourism. The race is AIMS-certified and is frequently used as a Boston Marathon qualifying course, giving competitive runners an added incentive to chase fast times on a world-class urban route. The course is a spectacular tour of Rome’s greatest landmarks and neighborhoods: runners pass the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine, thread through the ruins of the Roman Forum and Via dei Fori Imperiali, skirt the Tiber River, and make their way by the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica, with stretches along broad boulevards and intimate historic streets. The route features mostly flat stretches but includes short cobbled sections and gentle undulations that require respect and attention to pacing. Lined with enthusiastic local supporters, music stages, and cultural sights, the race offers a memorable sensory experience — the combination of ancient architecture, lively crowds, and well-organized aid stations makes Run Rome The Marathon both a bucket-list marathon for travelers and a competitive target for ambitious road runners.

The course is exceptionally scenic, winding past Rome's iconic landmarks including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, St. Peter's Basilica views and finishing along Via dei Fori Imperiali near the Colosseum.

Finishers receive a technical long-sleeve race shirt and a finisher medal, and the post-race village typically provides hot/cold refreshments, fruit, recovery areas and often a local beer/food garden.

Race weekend includes an official expo with bib collection and vendors in the days before the race and many local organizers or partners offer a Saturday pasta/carbo dinner or recommended pre-race meal options for participants.

Runners should expect aid stations roughly every 3–5 km, variable surfaces including cobblestones and narrow historic streets that require cautious pacing, and limited race-day parking so using Rome's public transport and arriving early is strongly recommended.
