The Lowdown

The San Francisco Marathon, first run in 1977, is one of the West Coast’s longest‑running and most beloved city marathons. Over the decades it has grown into a marquee summer event that draws a diverse international and local field — from competitive Boston‑qualifiers to first‑time marathoners — attracted by the race’s storied history, iconic city scenery, and festive community support. Held in late July 2026, the race continues the tradition of showcasing San Francisco’s unique neighborhoods and waterfronts while offering a challenging and rewarding road marathon experience. The course highlights include sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, rolling hills that wind through historic neighborhoods and coastal vistas, and stretches along the Embarcadero and waterfront that provide dramatic skyline and bay panoramas. Runners experience a mix of urban energy and natural beauty — cheering crowds, live music at aid stations, and enthusiastic volunteers create an electric but supportive atmosphere, while the course’s hills and varying terrain make pacing and preparation keys to success. The San Francisco Marathon course is USATF certified, recognized by AIMS, and is a Boston Marathon qualifying course, meeting the standards competitive runners look for when attempting to qualify.
