Steamboat Marathon
The Lowdown
The Steamboat Marathon is a point-to-point mountain race in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, run each June alongside the Elk River through the Elk River Valley with the Rocky Mountains framing the course. Now in its fifth decade, the 2027 edition marks the 46th annual running of the Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K. The course starts near Hahns Peak Village at roughly 8,160 feet and descends to the finish at the courthouse in downtown Steamboat Springs at about 6,660 feet, for a net elevation loss of over 1,400 feet -- though rolling hills throughout keep it from being a pure downhill run. The high starting altitude (Steamboat Springs itself sits near 6,700 feet) adds a real acclimatization factor for visiting runners. A USATF-certified course makes it an official Boston Marathon qualifier. Alpine Bank has been the event's presenting sponsor since 2023, continuing a partnership that dates back more than 15 years. Runner's World has ranked it among its Top 10 Destination Marathons in North America and featured the half marathon on its destination bucket list. Race weekend includes shuttle transport to the point-to-point start, a finish-line festival in downtown Steamboat Springs with lunch, beer, and towels for finishers, and a kids' Fun Run. Full and half marathon entrants must be at least 16; the 10K is open to runners 12 and up.
