The Lowdown

The Toronto Marathon is a spring road race held in Toronto, Ontario, run every year since 1995, typically on the first Sunday in May. Historically branded the GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon, the event is organized by Running First Ltd. and now markets under its sponsor-neutral name. The Marathon starts at 7:30 AM at Yonge Street and North York Blvd. in North York and finishes near Lake Shore Blvd. and Strachan Ave. by Exhibition Place -- a certified, net-downhill, point-to-point course through several of the city's neighbourhoods that Athletics Canada and AIMS recognize as one of the fastest and most Boston-Qualifier-friendly marathon routes in Canada. Race weekend also includes a Half Marathon, 10K Run, 5K Run/Walk, and a Marathon Relay, with the Half Marathon traditionally the largest field of the weekend. All finishers receive a shirt, bib, and medal, and the Marathon course closes six hours after the start. The Toronto Marathon is the official race of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, with participants having raised more than CA$8 million for the charity since the event began. It is also a qualifying race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Rankings. This spring event is a separate race from the autumn TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon, also held in Toronto.
