Trondheim Marathon
The Lowdown
Trondheim Marathon (Trondheim Maraton) is Norway's oldest marathon, first held in 1969 and formally established under its current name in 1983. Organized by Nidelv IL together with the Corporate Sports Association (Bedriftsidretten), the event has grown into the largest running weekend in central Norway, drawing a record 14,623 participants across all distances in 2025. Starting in 2026 the event runs as a full race weekend: Saturday, September 5 is a family day built around the Kids' Mini Marathon and community activities, while the main races take place on Sunday, September 6. The AIMS-certified, officially measured course is a compact loop through the heart of Trondheim, run four times for the full marathon and once for the half marathon. Runners pass along the Nidelva river and through the city center before extending out toward the Lade and Tempe districts, giving spectators repeated chances to cheer as the field loops back through downtown. The multi-lap format keeps runners close to aid stations, toilets, and crowd support throughout the race, and pacer groups are offered for marathon finish targets of 3:00-3:30, 3:30-4:00, and 4:00-plus. The marathon has a maximum completion time of 6 hours and a minimum age of 18. Alongside the full marathon, the weekend includes the Brilliant Half Marathon, the BDO 10K, the TrondelagKraft 5K, Coop team relay categories for the marathon and half marathon, and youth and children's races. Trondheim itself offers a compact, walkable city center, the Nidaros Cathedral, and riverside neighborhoods that make for an easy pre- and post-race base for visiting runners. Prices are in Norwegian krone (NOK).
