The Lowdown
The American Tobacco Trail 10 Miler (16.1 km) is an out-and-back race on the rail-trail south of Durham, first run in 2007 by the North Carolina Roadrunners Club. It starts and finishes at the White Oak Church Road trailhead in Apex. A 4-mile race on the same course runs alongside it. Women start at 8:50 a.m. and men at 8:58 a.m. in a chase format, and the first finisher overall wins a cash prize. In 2026 the course runs north into Chatham County because a trail wall is being repaired, with the turnaround at the 11.50-mile marker. Proceeds support Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy, and finishers get a long-sleeved tech shirt.
