Bay to Breakers 12K

Bay to Breakers 12K is a point-to-point road race that runs from the Embarcadero in downtown San Francisco to Ocean Beach on the Pacific coast, tracing the width of the peninsula. First run in 1912, it is one of the oldest continuously held annual footraces in the United States and has grown from a small footrace into a citywide costume party: elaborate individual costumes, themed running clubs, and the signature 13-person Centipede teams are as much a fixture as the race itself. The course climbs the short but steep Hayes Street Hill near Alamo Square around the 2-mile mark, then flattens through the Panhandle and Golden Gate Park before finishing on the sand-dusted Great Highway at Ocean Beach. The race set the Guinness World Record for largest footrace with roughly 110,000 participants in 1986, and modern editions still draw tens of thousands of runners, walkers, and spectators lining the closed streets. Beyond the 12K, Bay to Breakers also offers a 15K "Breakers Bonus" option and team entries; race weekend includes a shakeout run and community events around San Francisco. With chip timing, a finish line festival, and a laid-back, anything-goes atmosphere, it remains one of San Francisco's defining annual traditions.
