The Lowdown

The Big Island International Marathon is Hawaii's oldest marathon, run annually in Hilo since 1996 and organized by the Big Island International Marathon Association (BIIMA). The 2027 edition marks the race's 30th anniversary. All races start and finish at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Banyan Drive, with the Marathon beginning at 6:00am in the hotel's underground parking garage. The out-and-back course follows Hilo's old coast past Liliuokalani Gardens and Bayfront Park, over the Wailuku River's Singing Bridge, and out toward the old macadamia nut farms near the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden before returning to the hotel. A temporary reroute is in effect for the Marathon and Half Marathon while the historic Singing Bridge undergoes a multi-year rehabilitation. Alongside the Marathon, the event offers a Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and a non-timed 2-Mile Fun Walk, plus virtual race options for runners who can't travel to Hilo.
