BolderBOULDER
The Lowdown
The BolderBOULDER is a 10K road race through the streets of Boulder, Colorado, held every Memorial Day since 1979. What began as a small local gathering of a few hundred friends has grown into one of the largest 10K races in the world, drawing more than 50,000 runners and walkers and roughly 70,000 spectators each year. The course winds through Boulder neighborhoods and downtown, climbing a steady net elevation gain of around 400 feet (122 meters) at an elevation over a mile above sea level, before finishing inside the University of Colorado's Folsom Field. Entrants are assigned to wave starts based on projected finish time, with the fastest runners in the earliest waves and a separate jogging wave for those expecting to finish between 75 and 90 minutes; a professional elite race follows the citizen waves. Bands, costumed spectators, and neighborhood parties line the route, giving the event its reputation as part road race, part street festival. The day culminates in the country's largest Memorial Day Tribute, a ceremony honoring fallen service members held on the Folsom Field infield after the race. The BolderBOULDER remains locally owned and operated, and has awarded elite prize money exceeding $150,000 in recent years.
