The Lowdown

The Dam tot Damloop (Dam-to-Dam Run) is a 10-English-mile (16.1 km) point-to-point road race from Amsterdam to Zaandam in North Holland, the Netherlands, and is the country's largest running event, drawing around 35,000 finishers each year. First held in 1985 as a fun run, it added an elite race in 1986 and has been dominated since the 1990s by East African, particularly Kenyan, distance runners; the men's course record of 44:27 was set by Leonard Komon in 2011 and the women's record of 50:31 by Ingrid Kristiansen in 1987. Runners start at Prins Hendrikkade near Amsterdam Centraal, pass through the IJ Tunnel beneath the IJ waterway, and finish in Peperstraat in Zaandam, on a flat, fast course lined with live music and entertainment. The weekend also includes the 5-English-mile Damloop by Night on Saturday evening, a party-style race with lights and DJ sets, plus children's Mini Dam tot Damlopen and business and charity team categories. Nationale-Nederlanden (NN) became title sponsor in 2024 for a multi-year run; the race carried ASICS as its long-time prior sponsor. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. The 2026 edition marks the race's 40th anniversary, held the weekend of September 19-20, with both the 10 and 5 English Mile fields already sold out.
