The Lowdown
The Leiden Marathon returns for its 36th edition on Sunday, May 9, 2027, as the main event of a weekend that opens the evening before with a floodlit 5K night run. Established in 1991, the race is organized by marathon.nl and draws more than 14,000 runners across all distances each year, with roughly 1,000 tackling the full marathon. The single-loop, AIMS-certified course starts on Koninginnelaan and finishes at the historic Vismarkt, tracing Leiden's canal-lined city center before heading out through flat surrounding polders and green villages and looping back through crowd-lined streets to the finish arch. Distance sponsors include SWIS (marathon), Bunnig & Partners (half marathon), Zorg en Zekerheid (10K), PF Concept (5K night run), and Corpus (2.1K Kids Run). The flat, fast layout has made Leiden a recognized Boston Marathon qualifying course. Registration for the 2027 race opens October 1, 2026 at noon; prices are set at €69 for the marathon, €42 for the half marathon, €29 for the 10K, and €16 for the 5K night run, with the Kids Run free.
