Marathon des Vins de la Côte Chalonnaise

The Marathon des Vins de la Côte Chalonnaise turns 14 villages of Burgundy's Côte Chalonnaise wine region into a single course each spring, starting and finishing in Givry, one of the area's signature appellations. Runners tackle 42.2 km that are roughly 80% paved road and 20% vineyard track, climbing about 400 m as the route threads through Mercurey, Rully, Buxy, and neighboring communes. The event, now in its ninth edition, doubles as a celebration of regional gastronomy: 17 aid stations pour local wines alongside charcuterie, cheese, and other Burgundian specialties, and roughly half the field runs in costume for the event's fancy-dress contest. Alongside the full marathon, the weekend offers a half marathon, a three-person relay marathon (Mara3), 8 km and 12 km trail routes through the vines, and children's races, plus Sunday walking options in nearby Buxy. Late March in Givry is cool, typically around 13°C, with the marathon starting at 9:00 am. The race is registered on the French Athletics Federation (FFA) calendar at departmental level and carries the 'Challenge de la Convivialité' distinction shared by Europe's most festive marathons.
