Maratón de Barranquilla
The Lowdown
The Maratón de Barranquilla is Colombia's Caribbean-coast marathon, run along the Río Magdalena and Caribbean Sea in the country's fourth-largest city. Certified by World Athletics and AIMS, the race starts and finishes on the Gran Malecón del Río and draws roughly 10,000 runners across the 42K, 21K, 10K, and 5K distances, with about 135 million Colombian pesos in prize money. Nicknamed 'la maratón más alegre de Colombia' (Colombia's happiest marathon) for its carnival-city atmosphere, live music, and dancing aid stations, the course threads through historic neighborhoods like Barrio Abajo and El Prado before heading north along Vía 40 toward the Las Flores district. The 2026 tenth-anniversary edition added roughly 18 kilometers of scenic new terrain, including the beaches of Puerto Mocho and a stretch through the Ecoparque Ciénaga de Mallorquín, a protected mangrove wetland, where marathoners cover 2,300 meters of boardwalk around kilometer 31. The course is flat and fast, at or near sea level throughout, but the tropical Caribbean climate means heat and humidity build quickly after the pre-dawn 4:15 a.m. start. The 2027 edition, the event's eleventh, is scheduled for March 14, 2027, with the same start/finish at the Gran Malecón and registration open through the official Eventrid platform.
