Stavanger Marathon
The Lowdown
The Stavanger Marathon is Norway's coastal marathon, held annually on the last Saturday of August in Stavanger, on the country's southwestern coast. The course circles three city lakes (Breiavatnet, Stora Stokkavatnet, and Mosvatnet) and hugs the shorelines of Hafrsfjord and Gandsfjorden, passing the iconic Sverd i fjell (Swords in Rock) monument along the way. Runners climb roughly 280 meters of elevation gain over a route that is just over half asphalt and the rest runnable gravel, making for a scenic but not entirely flat course. Both the marathon and half marathon start and finish in Stavanger's city center. The event is organized by GTI Friidrettsklubb and is a full member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). Race weekend also includes a half marathon, a 5K starting at Mariero station, and a children's race, drawing runners from across Scandinavia and beyond. The 2026 edition takes place on August 29, with online registration open through August 14.
