- Use a recent race (within the last 4-6 weeks) for the most accurate predictions.
- Your input race should be an all-out effort, not a training run or easy race.
- Predictions work best when the target distance is within 2-4x of your input distance.
- For ultras (50K+), consider adding extra time for terrain, aid stations, and fatigue factors not captured by the formula.
How to Use This Calculator
Select your most recent race distance and enter your finish time. The predictor uses the Riegel formula to estimate equivalent performances at 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, and 50K distances. Predictions are most accurate when your input race was recent (within the last 6-8 weeks) and run at maximum effort. The further you extrapolate from your input distance, the wider the confidence interval — a 10K time predicts a half marathon more reliably than it predicts a 50K.
The Riegel formula, explained

The formula predicts a finish time at one race distance from a known finish time at another distance. It models the relationship between distance and time as a power law: as distance increases, time increases slightly faster than proportionally, which is how the formula accounts for accumulated fatigue over longer races.
- T1 — the known finish time (the recent race result used as input)
- D1 — the distance of that known result
- D2 — the target distance being predicted
- T2 — the predicted finish time at D2
- 1.06 — the fatigue exponent (see below)
Where it comes from
Peter Riegel published the formula in 1977 ("Time Predicting," Runner's World) and refined it in 1981 (American Scientist). It's an empirical model: endurance performance degrades predictably with distance, and 1.06 is the exponent Riegel fitted to observed race and time-trial data across running, swimming, and cycling for trained athletes. It isn't derived from a physiological law — it's a fatigue factor fitted to data, which is why some researchers use higher exponents (roughly 1.07-1.08) for ultra distances, where fatigue compounds faster than the standard exponent assumes.

Arithmetic for the marathon row: divide the marathon distance by the 10K distance (42.195 km ÷ 10 km = 4.2195). Raise that ratio to the 1.06 power (4.21951.06 ≈ 4.600). Multiply by the known 10K time (45:00 × 4.600 ≈ 3:27:01).
Honest limits
- Assumes equivalent training for the target distance — a 10K specialist's marathon prediction will run optimistic.
- Overestimates marathon performance for runners under roughly 30-35 weekly training miles, or those finishing beyond about 4 hours.
- Less reliable when extrapolating more than about 4x in distance (for example, a marathon prediction from a 5K).
