The Amman Marathon is Jordan's flagship road race and the largest annual sporting event in the country, organized by the NGO Run Jordan since the event was founded in 2009 under the patronage of King Abdullah II. Certified by AIMS and World Athletics, the marathon starts near the Greater Amman Municipality and Hashemite Square, winds through the traffic-closed streets of downtown Amman past Quraysh Street and Al-Mesdar, and finishes beside the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in the historic heart of the city. The race is currently title-sponsored by Jordan Bromine Company and officially branded the Bromine Amman Marathon, though it is widely known simply as the Amman Marathon. Alongside the full 42.2 km marathon, the event weekend features a 21.1 km half marathon, a 10K, wheelchair and visually-impaired divisions, and a children's fun run, drawing tens of thousands of participants from Jordan and abroad each October. Registration is split between a lower-cost tier for Jordanian citizens and residents and a separate international entry fee for non-resident runners.
