Borobudur Marathon
The Lowdown
The Borobudur Marathon is Indonesia's premier annual marathon, held at the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site of Borobudur Temple in Magelang Regency, Central Java. Organized by the Borobudur Marathon Foundation in partnership with the Central Java Provincial Government and sponsored by Bank Jateng, the race takes runners through scenic routes weaving among rice paddies, dense tropical vegetation, and traditional Javanese villages with the 9th-century Buddhist temple as the backdrop. The event offers three race distances — full marathon, half marathon, and 10K — and is affiliated with PASI (Indonesian Athletics Federation) and AIMS. With its deep cultural integration and stunning scenery, the Borobudur Marathon is a flagship event in Indonesian running tourism, drawing both domestic and international participants.
