The Lowdown

The COMAR Tunis-Carthage Marathon is Tunisia's largest annual road race, held every December in the capital, Tunis, since it was founded in 1986 by the insurer COMAR Assurances. The 2026 edition, the 39th, takes place on Sunday, December 6, 2026, and offers three main distances: the 42.195km marathon, a 21.1km half marathon, and a 5km race open to all runners (plus a shorter kids' race), all starting together from Avenue Habib Bourguiba in the city center. The flat, loop course circles Lake Tunis and passes major boulevards and landmarks of the capital before finishing back near Place du 14 Janvier, making it one of North Africa's most accessible marathon courses for runners chasing a fast time or a Boston Qualifier. More than 7,000 runners from over 40 nationalities take part each year, drawn by the event's World Athletics Label Road Race certification and its AIMS membership, held since 2019. Entry costs 15 Tunisian dinars for Tunisian residents and non-federation club runners registering online (20 dinars in person), or 15 euros for non-resident foreign entrants; the 5km race and kids' race are free, with a voluntary environmental contribution of 1 dinar per tree planted. The marathon carries a 5-hour course time limit, and race weekend typically brings mild, dry Mediterranean winter mornings, ideal marathon weather. Registration for the 2026 edition is expected to open in the months before race day through the official COMAR marathon website.
