Falmouth Road Race

The Falmouth Road Race is a 7-mile (11.3 km) road race held every August in Falmouth, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. Founded in 1973 by bartender Tommy Leonard after Frank Shorter's 1972 Olympic marathon victory, the Falmouth Road Race has grown from roughly 100 runners into one of the most sought-after road races in the country, drawing more than 11,000 finishers each year and many more entrants to its random-selection lottery. The point-to-point course starts at the Captain Kidd Restaurant in Woods Hole, climbs through three miles of narrow, tree-shaded hills, then flattens out along Surf Drive beside Martha's Vineyard Sound before a short, steep rise into the final half-mile and a downhill finish at Falmouth Heights. In 1975 the Falmouth Road Race became the first U.S. road race to host an official wheelchair division, and Dick and Rick Hoyt completed 37 consecutive editions.
