Hapalua - Hawaii's Half Marathon
The Lowdown
Hapalua - Hawaii's Half Marathon is Hawaii's largest half marathon, held each April on the streets of Honolulu. Organized by the Honolulu Marathon Association -- the same organization behind the JAL Honolulu Marathon -- the race begins at 6:00 AM at the Duke Kahanamoku statue on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki. Runners head west along Kalakaua Avenue and Ala Moana Boulevard toward the historic Aloha Tower before turning back through Waikiki toward Diamond Head. The course's signature climb comes on Diamond Head Road, where runners pass the Diamond Head Lighthouse before turning around at Triangle Park in Kahala. The race finishes in Kapiolani Park, where finishers receive a medal and Hawaii's beloved malasadas (Portuguese-style donuts) in the finisher village. The event has no qualifying standard and no time limit, welcoming both runners and walkers, and typically draws several thousand participants each year. A companion event, the Hapalua IKI, covers 8.3 miles (13.3 km) and finishes in Kapiolani Park before the half marathoners continue up Diamond Head. The race is presented by Japan Airlines with support from Outrigger Hospitality Group, and entries include a bundle option with the Kings Runner 10K held earlier in race week.
