Maratona de Floripa
The Lowdown
The Maratona de Floripa is widely regarded as the fastest marathon in Brazil, with an 80% flat, sea-level course that makes it a magnet for personal bests and Boston Qualifying attempts. Set on the tropical island city of Florianópolis — known affectionately as 'Floripa' — the course runs along the scenic Beira-Mar Norte waterfront avenue with views across Florianópolis Bay, past the iconic Hercílio Luz suspension bridge connecting the island to the mainland, and through the Via Expressa Sul before returning to the historic center. Now in its 15th edition, the race has grown to over 19,000 registered athletes across all distances, making it one of Brazil's biggest running events. The two-day format features the half marathon and 5K on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday, creating a true running festival. The very early 5:15 AM marathon start is timed to take advantage of cool August winter temperatures (12-21°C) before the subtropical sun warms the course. A medical certificate is mandatory as per Brazilian race regulations. Floripa's combination of stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, excellent seafood, and welcoming Brazilian culture makes it one of South America's most desirable marathon destinations — a place where a fast race and a memorable vacation go hand in hand.
