Mid Winter 10 Mile Classic
The Lowdown
The Mid Winter 10 Mile Classic is an annual road race in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, organized by the Maine Track Club since 1982, when it started with just 17 runners. Today it is one of the most competitive winter road races in New England: past winners include Olympic medalists Joan Benoit Samuelson and Lynn Jennings, and the event has hosted the Road Runners Club of America Eastern Region Championship. The single-loop, 10-mile (16.1 km) course starts and finishes at Cape Elizabeth High School and winds through the rolling hills of the town's western half, passing historic homes and a stretch of wetlands bordering neighboring Scarborough; roughly two miles overlap the route of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, a separate summer race held in the same town. It is held on the first Sunday in February in most years (the 2026 edition moved from February 1 to March 1 after a forecast of astronomical high tides and dangerous wind chill), and is known for unpredictable New England winter conditions. A virtual 10-mile option lets runners who cannot make race day complete the distance on their own course during race week. Proceeds support the Maine Track Club and local high school running teams. The field is capped at 1,000 registrants.
