The Lowdown

The Santander Maratona de Curitiba is the largest marathon in southern Brazil and one of the country's most technically demanding, set at approximately 950 meters above sea level with relentless climbs and descents through Curitiba's elegant neighborhoods. The course starts at the Praça Nossa Senhora de Salete in the Civic Center and winds through the upscale Batel district, past the world-famous Jardim Botânico with its iconic greenhouse, near the innovative Ópera de Arame (Wire Opera House), and through Curitiba's tree-lined boulevards that have earned it recognition as one of the greenest cities in the Americas. With roughly 350 meters of total elevation gain, this is a race that demands respect and smart pacing — the hilly profile at altitude makes it a true test of endurance compared to sea-level flat courses. The 2025 edition set a record with 16,200 registered athletes, and the event continues to grow as one of the best-organized marathons in Brazil. The race offers distances from 5K to the full marathon, with Santander cardholders receiving a 10% registration discount. November's spring weather brings temperatures of 15-25°C, and the extremely early 5:30 AM start time is designed to beat the afternoon heat. Curitiba's European-influenced architecture, outstanding coffee culture, and innovative urban planning make it one of Brazil's most livable and interesting cities to visit.
