The Lowdown

The Statesman Capitol 10K (Cap10K) is Austin's marquee 10K road race, held every spring since 1978. Now Texas's largest 10K and one of the five largest 10Ks in the United States, the race draws well over 20,000 runners and walkers to downtown Austin each April. The course starts near the Ann Richards Bridge over Lady Bird Lake, crosses Congress Avenue, and winds past the Texas State Capitol before finishing at Vic Mathias Shores (Auditorium Shores) on the lake's south shore; a notable climb on W. 15th St. at West Ave, known as the "K & Q of the Hill Challenge," is the course's signature test. Known locally as Austin's "rite of spring," the race has been presented by the Austin American-Statesman since its first edition, with Baylor Scott & White Health serving as presenting sponsor in recent years. Finishers receive a tech race shirt and finisher's medal, and the post-race Finish Line Festival includes a health and fitness expo. Since 1993 the race has donated a portion of entry fees to local nonprofits through its philanthropy program, currently benefiting the Sustainable Food Center. A virtual 10K option lets runners anywhere complete the distance on their own course and still earn the official finisher's medal. With a fast core route, mild spring weather, and one of the largest fields in American road racing, the Statesman Capitol 10K is a bucket-list event for Texas runners.
