Stockholm Marathon
The Lowdown
The Stockholm Marathon is one of the world's iconic early-summer city marathons, first run in 1979 and organized jointly by Hässelby SK and Spårvägens FK athletics clubs, with event surplus returned to Swedish sports programs. Currently title-sponsored as the adidas Stockholm Marathon (a past edition of the race carried ASICS sponsorship). The race starts on Lidingövägen near Östermalm's sports grounds and finishes inside the 1912 Olympic Stadium (Stockholms Stadion), a finish widely described by runners as one of the most atmospheric in the sport. The 42.195 km course was redesigned for the 2026 edition into a single-loop route (a change from the race's traditional two-loop format) described as having a new rhythm and being slightly flatter than the classic course, while still threading through Gamla Stan (the old town, passed on both sides of the loop) and past the Royal Palace, Djurgården, Södermalm's SoFo district, and Kungsholmen/City Hall before returning to the Olympic Stadium. The most demanding climbs — Katarinavägen, Hornsgatan/Lundagatan, and Västerbron — come in the first half, with a notable tree-lined incline on Narvavägen later in the course.
