The Lowdown

21K Chetumal is an annual road race in Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo on Mexico's Caribbean coast, typically held in early August. It offers three distances — 5K, 10K, and the half marathon — all starting on Boulevard Bahía, the longest boulevard on the Yucatán Peninsula. The half marathon runs on one of two FMA (Mexican Athletics Federation)-certified routes, the only certified courses in southern Quintana Roo, passing landmarks like the Monumento al Pescador, the Monumento a la Bandera, and the Barrio Mágico district. Races start early, with the half marathon at 5:30 a.m., to beat the tropical heat. The 2026 fifth-anniversary edition drew runners from 17 Mexican states plus Spain, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, the United States, and Germany, with more than 1,500 finishers across the three distances. Categories include Open, Submaster, Master, Veteran, and Veteran Plus divisions, plus wheelchair and visual-impairment categories, with a total prize pool over 170,000 Mexican pesos.
