The Lowdown

The Medio Maratón Tulum is a young but quickly popular half marathon held in the Riviera Maya town known for its turquoise coast and Mayan heritage. Organized locally by ASdeporte, the event has become a festive year‑end fixture for regional runners and visiting athletes seeking a scenic December race in warm weather. While it is not listed among AIMS or World Athletics certified races and is not a Boston Marathon qualifier, the race is staged with local federation sanctioning and course measurement to Mexican national standards to ensure accurate timing and fair competition. The course highlights combine coastal vistas, tropical jungle edges and the charming streets of Tulum Pueblo. Runners experience flat, fast stretches along the coastal highway and seaside avenues with ocean breezes, punctuated by shaded tree-lined sections and glimpses of cenote areas and archaeological atmosphere on approach to the town. The early 06:30 start creates comfortable running temperatures and a vibrant, community-focused atmosphere — music, local vendors, and cultural touches (Mayan-themed aid stations and finish‑area festivities) give the race a relaxed, celebratory feel that appeals to both competitive runners chasing personal bests and recreational participants enjoying a memorable destination race.

Start line: Explanada del Palacio Municipal de Tulum, ubicada en Av. Tulum manzana 1, lote 1, Calle Alfa Sur 1, Tulum Centro, 77760 Tulum, Quintana Roo.

Organized by the Ayuntamiento de Tulum (municipal government); since the 2024 edition, event production and online registration are handled by Asdeporte.

Editions run so far: December 1, 2024 (about 1,000 finishers, first year under Asdeporte) and December 7, 2025 (2,500 places, sold out before November 20, with over half of entrants from other states and countries).

Registration typically opens in the autumn and has sold out well before race week — the 2025 field filled roughly three weeks early.

The course is expected to be mostly flat, but there may be some uneven terrain, especially if you pass through natural areas or near beaches.

Tulum is a popular tourist destination, so there are a variety of accommodations ranging from budget-friendly hostels to luxury resorts. Consider booking early, especially if you want to stay close to the event.

The combination of heat and humidity could challenge your endurance. If you're not used to tropical conditions, consider training in similar weather or simulating the climate as much as possible.
