The Lowdown

Ferrara Marathon is the historic marathon of Ferrara, Italy, first run in 1979 as the Vigarano Maratona before relocating to Ferrara in 1999; the race completed 40 editions through 2019, then paused before a partial 2023 relaunch on non-standard distances. The event now returns in full on Sunday, February 28, 2027 as its 41st edition, timed to coincide with Ferrara's year as European Capital of Sport. The 42.195 km course starts and finishes at Castello Estense, heading north on Via Borgo dei Leoni before turning onto Corso Porta Mare past Palazzo dei Diamanti, then continuing along Corso Rossetti and Corso Porta Po into the Renaissance Walls (Mura Estensi) that ring much of the route. Runners pass through Giorgio Bassani Urban Park at km 7.5, Piazzale delle Medaglie d'Oro at km 15.9, and the outlying fractions of Malborghetto and Porotto before returning to Piazza Ariostea at km 40 for the final stretch back to Castello Estense. The redesigned 2027 route drops the long out-and-back stretch along the Po River used in earlier editions in favor of a route that stays within Ferrara's UNESCO-listed historic center. Race day starts at 9:00 am with a 6-hour-30-minute time limit, and a half marathon (21K, tracing back to the 1993 CorriFerrara) and a 10K city run share much of the same course. The event is organized by Ravenna InSport, which also runs the Ravenna Marathon and offers combined-registration packages between the two races. Registration for 2027 opened with tiered EUR pricing that rises as race day approaches.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

Founded in 1979 as the Vigarano Maratona; relocated to Ferrara in 1999 and ran 40 editions through 2019, then paused before a partial 2023 relaunch on non-standard distances (not the full 42.195 km).

The 2027 edition (41st) is a full relaunch of the original marathon distance, deliberately timed to coincide with Ferrara being named European Capital of Sport for 2027.

The half marathon (21K) traces its roots to the 1993 CorriFerrara.

The 2027 course was redesigned to stay within Ferrara's UNESCO World Heritage historic center and the Renaissance Walls, dropping the long out-and-back stretch along the Po River used in earlier editions.

Organized by Ravenna InSport, which also runs the Ravenna Marathon; the two events offer combined-registration packages (e.g. 42K Ravenna + 42K Ferrara).
