The Lowdown

Herzogstadtlauf Straubing is Lower Bavaria's largest running event, held annually in the Danube city of Straubing — nicknamed the "Herzogstadt" (duke's city) for its 14th-century role as a ducal residence. The weekend runs across two days: Saturday brings the aquatherm-Junior-Herzogstadtlauf children's and youth races plus an inclusion run, and Sunday hosts the main program, headlined by the 21.1 km half marathon alongside a 10 km run, a 5 km run and walking event, and 20 km/40 km relay team runs. All races start and finish at Am Hagen in Straubing's historic quarter, with the half marathon looping past the Stadtturm city tower, Ludwigsplatz, the Theresien Center, and along the Allachbach stream through the old town before a short descent from the Kinseherberg back to the finish. The 15th edition ran June 13–14, 2026, drawing several thousand finishers across all distances (5,328 in the 2025 edition alone); the 16th edition is expected on a similar June weekend in 2027, with registration typically opening January 1 and online sign-up via herzogstadtlauf.de closing in early June. Individual race distances carry local sponsor names — the BMW-Halbmarathon, the Wallstabe & Schneider-Powerlauf (10 km), and the AOK-Fitnesslauf (5 km) among them — while the event itself is organized by the City of Straubing's Stadtmarketing office.

15th edition held June 13–14, 2026; billed by the City of Straubing as "Ostbayerns größte Laufveranstaltung" (Lower Bavaria's largest running event).

Straubing's nickname "Herzogstadt" (duke's city) comes from its history as a residence of the Dukes of Bavaria-Straubing-Holland in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Finisher counts have grown steadily in recent years: 2,293 (2023), 2,900 (2024), 5,328 (2025).
