The Lowdown

The Königsforst Marathon is one of Germany's most beloved and enduring forest marathons, taking runners through the stunning Königsforst woodland area near Cologne. Established decades ago, this race has built a reputation for its intimate, nature-focused atmosphere and challenging yet rewarding forest trails. The course winds through dense beech and oak forests, offering runners a peaceful escape from urban racing while still maintaining excellent organization and support. The marathon features a scenic loop course that showcases the natural beauty of the Königsforst, with well-maintained forest paths and minimal elevation changes that make it accessible to runners of all abilities. The tranquil setting, combined with enthusiastic local support and well-stocked aid stations, creates a uniquely personal racing experience. This race attracts a dedicated community of marathon enthusiasts who appreciate the combination of competitive racing and natural surroundings. While it may not be a certified Boston Qualifier course due to its trail nature, the Königsforst Marathon offers something equally valuable: a chance to test your endurance in one of Germany's most picturesque forest settings, supported by experienced race organizers who have been perfecting this event for over five decades.

The Königsforst Marathon is a forest marathon held on mixed forest trails and country paths in the Königsforst east of Cologne, offering scenic woodland views and a mostly soft-surface course that can be muddy in wet conditions.

Finishers receive a technical long‑sleeve shirt and a commemorative finisher medal; post-race amenities typically include hot drinks and light snacks at the finish area.

The event is part of a race weekend with shorter distances and a children's run, and awards are presented for overall and standard age-group placings in the marathon.

Runners should plan to use trail or mixed‑terrain shoes, arrive early for limited parking near the start, and expect aid stations approximately every 4–6 km with water and sports drink; the organizer enforces a marathon cutoff around 6 hours.

All three distances (ultra 63.3km, marathon 42.2km, half marathon 21.1km) share the same fee structure; participants may spontaneously switch to a longer or shorter distance on race day without additional cost.
