The Lowdown
The Maratón de Viña del Mar is a coastal marathon in the Valparaíso Region of Chile, held in early October. It starts and finishes in Reñaca. The marathon runs two laps of a shoreline circuit that reaches Caleta Portales in Valparaíso. The half marathon runs one lap. The route is almost entirely flat, and the average race-day temperature is around 18°C. The race grew out of a 10K along the Viña del Mar coast. The full marathon has been run every year since 2013, except in 2020 and 2021, when the pandemic cancelled it. By 2017 it had more than 10,000 runners, making it the second-largest marathon in Chile after Santiago. The 2024 edition had more than 14,000 registered participants. The marathon and half marathon distances are certified by World Athletics. Daniel Kipkemboi of Kenya set the men's course record of 2:13:32 in 2019. Aydeé Loayza of Peru set the women's record of 2:35:37 in 2024. Chilean runners have won the race more often than runners from any other country. Prokart SpA organizes the event, and Itaú is the 2026 title sponsor. The weekend also includes a 10K, and every finisher receives a medal.
