The Lowdown

The Maratón Martín Fiz is an annual marathon held each May in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of Spain's Basque Country. Named for Martín Fiz, the Vitoria-Gasteiz-born runner who won gold in the marathon at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg, the race has grown into one of the region's most popular running festivals, pairing the 42.2K marathon with a half marathon (21K), a 10K, a 5K, and a 1K children's race on the same morning. All distances start and finish at the Mendizorroza sports complex, and marathon runners complete two flat laps through the city center, passing the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, the old cathedral, and stretches of the Anillo Verde green belt that rings Vitoria-Gasteiz. The course's flat, two-lap layout and enthusiastic local crowds make it a favorite for runners chasing a personal best. The 2026 edition, then title-sponsored by TotalEnergies, drew roughly 5,000 runners across all distances and sold out every bib by the end of April; the event now runs under sponsor Elproex. The 2027 edition is scheduled for Sunday, May 16, with registration already open for all five distances.
