The Lowdown

The Maratona di San Valentino is Terni's celebration of its identity as the city of Saint Valentine, patron saint of lovers, run on a Sunday in February each year -- the next edition falls on February 21, 2027. The single-loop course starts and finishes on Corso del Popolo in central Terni, climbing briefly past the Basilica di San Valentino before descending into the Valnerina valley, passing through Ferentillo and the Marmore Falls -- Europe's tallest man-made waterfall at 165 meters -- on the way back to the city. The full marathon (42.195 km) and half marathon (21.097 km) share the same route, alongside a non-competitive Couples Marathon, an 8K Family Run, and a 2K Dog Run. Aid stations are set every 5 km and the race is a full member of AIMS. It draws roughly 3,000 runners across all distances, most from Italy but with a growing international field of around 40 runners from a dozen countries. Finishers receive a heart-shaped medal, a fitting touch for a race built entirely around Terni's Valentine's Day tradition.
