The Lowdown

The Montana Governor's Cup is Helena's longstanding running festival, held on the second Saturday of June since 1974. Presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana, the event centers on the Half Marathon alongside 10K, 5K, and Mile Run races, all starting behind the Holter Museum on Cruse Avenue. The half marathon climbs into the hills above the Helena valley for spectacular views before a demanding stretch known as Cardiac Hill near mile 11, then finishes downtown on the historic walking mall beneath the State Capitol. The 10K and 5K share the same start and finish, weaving past Mount Helena and other Capital City landmarks. Every registration fee supports the Caring Foundation of Montana, which funds healthcare access in rural communities. With five decades of history, the Governor's Cup remains one of Montana's most established road race weekends, drawing families, recreational runners, and competitive athletes alike. Note: the event dropped its full marathon distance starting with the 2026 edition due to a course-surface change; only the Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and Mile Run are currently offered.
