The Lowdown
The Muttenz Marathon is an annual road-and-trail running festival held in Muttenz, a town in the canton of Basel-Landschaft just outside Basel, Switzerland. First established in the early 2010s, the event has grown into a fixture of the regional running calendar, pausing only in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the 16th edition ran on March 8, 2026, with around 725 finishers across the adult distances and the 800-place adult field selling out in the final week before race day. The 17th edition is expected in March 2027, following the event's usual second-Sunday-of-March scheduling pattern, though the organizer had not yet published the exact 2027 date, entry fees, or opened registration as of this record's creation.
All distances start and finish at the Margelacker schoolhouse (Schulhaus Margelacker) in Muttenz. The marathon covers two laps of a mixed-surface loop through forest roads, trail paths and asphalt streets across roughly 1,000 meters of cumulative elevation gain, weaving between the built-up edge of Muttenz and the nearby nature and recreation areas of the Basel-Landschaft countryside; the half marathon covers a single lap of the same course with about 500 meters of gain. Alongside the marathon and half marathon, the event also offers a 10K spring run, a 10K walking event, a 4.7K MuMa Sprint, a short student run and a children's run, making it a family-friendly day out as well as a serious road-and-trail challenge. Jenzer Natura is the event's main sponsor, with Drescher Running supplying the finisher bags. Changing rooms, showers and toilets are available at the Margelacker schoolhouse for all participants.
