The Lowdown

The Tacoma Narrows Half Marathon is an annual out-and-back race organized by the Tacoma City Marathon Association (TCMA), held on the last Saturday of August at Cheney Stadium, home of the Tacoma Rainiers minor league baseball team. Alongside the half marathon, the event includes 10K and 5K distances, all starting and finishing at the stadium with a lap on the warning track. The half marathon course follows the paved Scott Pierson Trail, crosses a pedestrian bridge over Highway 16, winds through Tacoma's quiet Skyline neighborhood, and climbs onto the Tacoma Narrows Bridge for sweeping views of the Puget Sound before returning the same way to the stadium finish. The race has run since 2008 (with a virtual edition in 2020), making it a long-standing fixture of the South Puget Sound running calendar. Race weekend is paired with the Tacoma Rainiers' 'Health and Wellness Series,' which has included post-race yoga on the outfield grass and a discounted Rainiers game for participants. Every finisher receives a commemorative medal and a guaranteed tech tank top if registered by the early-July cutoff, and a portion of proceeds benefits the Humane Society for Tacoma-Pierce County. Packet pickup is held the afternoon before the race at the Ruston Waterfront Market, and the half marathon carries a generous four-hour time limit, making the mostly flat-to-rolling out-and-back course, with its one signature climb onto the bridge, approachable for a wide range of finishers.
