The Lowdown

The Trieste 42K is the marathon centerpiece of the Trieste Spring Run weekend, organized by ASD Trieste Atletica and APD Miramar and staged as part of the historic Bavisela running festival (2026 marked its 30th anniversary), which returned the marathon distance to Friuli-Venezia Giulia after a long absence. The FIDAL-certified 42.195 km course starts and finishes in the grand Piazza Unità d'Italia, opening with an urban and coastal stretch toward Barcola before climbing gently along the panoramic Strada Costiera (Coastal Road) above the Adriatic to a turnaround point near Sistiana, then returning with a gradual downhill back to the piazza. The race shares its weekend with a 21K half marathon, the Muggia 10K, a 7K family run, and a youth event, drawing runners from roughly 52 countries and more than 10,000 participants across all distances. The minimum age for the marathon is 20. The 2026 edition, held May 3, was won by Kenya's Benjamin Kiprop Serem in 2:32:21 on the men's side and Giulia Colombo in 3:00:27 for the women; results and a full bib pickup expo at Piazza Unità d'Italia (May 1-2) are organized around race weekend. As of this listing, no 2027 date has been officially announced.
