Allgäu Panorama Marathon
The Lowdown
The Allgäu Panorama Marathon is Sonthofen's signature mountain-running festival in the Bavarian Allgäu, held every August since 2008. The 20th edition takes place Sunday, August 8, 2027, anchored by the marathon start at 8:00 AM from the Allgäu-Outlet in Sonthofen and a finish at the Wonnemar leisure pool. The full marathon covers 42.2 km with roughly 1,400 meters of elevation gain, climbing from the Illertal valley floor toward the Hörnerkette peaks — Ofterschwanger Horn, Sigiswanger Horn, and Rangiswanger Horn — before descending through Bolsterlang and along the Iller to the finish. Six more distances share race weekend: the 69.5 km Ultra (3,089 m elevation gain, 6:00 AM start, an 8.5-hour cutoff at the Oberstdorf checkpoint and a 19:00 overall time limit) loops through Grasgehren, Rohrmoos, Söllereck, and Oberstdorf before a final climb to Sonnenkopfgipfel; the 18.3 km Hörnerlauf (1,111 m gain, 7:00 AM start) turns back at the Grasgehren aid station; and the 21.1 km Half Marathon (190 m gain) starts in two waves at 9:15 and 9:25 AM on a gentler out-and-back toward the source of the Iller. On Saturday, August 7, a new Halbmarathon Reverse — introduced for the 20th anniversary and run in the opposite direction on nearly the same course — joins the 5K Rennergy run and the Kids-Run, all starting near the Wonnemar. More than 4,200 runners registered across every distance in 2026. Entry fees rise in tiers as race day approaches; 2026 season pricing ran from €51 (half marathon, early bird) up to €140 (ultra, late registration), and 2027 pricing had not yet been published when this record was created. Finishers receive a medal at the Wonnemar finish area with pool access for a post-race shower, and volunteers staff aid stations roughly every 4–5 km on every course.
