Alsterlauf Hamburg
The Lowdown
Alsterlauf Hamburg is a 10-kilometer road race held every September around Hamburg's Aussenalster (Outer Alster) lake, with start and finish on Ballindamm in the city center. First held in 1990, the race has grown into one of Europe's largest 10K road races, drawing roughly 5,000 runners onto a flat, fully paved, traffic-free course certified by World Athletics and measured to AIMS standards (valid through 2028). Course records stand at 28:10 for men and 30:57 for women. A companion 5-kilometer race loops the Binnenalster (Inner Alster), alongside youth and school races on the same morning. For decades the event carried the name of health insurer BARMER as title sponsor; running-insole brand CURREX became the new title partner starting with the 2026 edition, so this record uses the sponsor-neutral name. Aidshilfe Hamburg e.V. has served as the race's official charity partner for more than 20 years. The Alsterlauf is organized by BMS Die Laufgesellschaft mbH and is entirely separate from the city's spring marathon weekend, Haspa Marathon Hamburg.
