The Lowdown
Grand-Prix von Bern is a 16.093 km (10 mile) road race through the Swiss capital, run entirely within Bern's UNESCO World Heritage old town, along the Aare river and through the Dählhölzli Zoo forest. Billed by organizers as "the most beautiful 10 miles in the world," the course passes the Bärengraben (bear pits), Nydeggbrücke, Zytglogge clock tower, Rathaus, Bundeshaus (Swiss Federal Palace) and Bern Münster cathedral, climbing a total of 204 meters to a high point near Bolligenstrasse (km 15.5) before finishing close to its 558-meter starting elevation. First held in 1982, the Grand-Prix von Bern has grown into one of Switzerland's largest mass-participation running festivals, run alongside the shorter Altstadt Grand Prix (4.7 km), the Bären Grand Prix (1.6 km, for children, families and beginners) and a Coca-Cola Inclusion Run for athletes with disabilities. The 44th edition, held May 9, 2026, drew a record 37,853 registrations and 34,387 classified finishers; Swiss runners Dominic Lobalu (46:58) and Oria Liaci (55:50) won the Original Grand Prix, and Federal Councillor Beat Jans ran the Altstadt-GP. The 45th Grand-Prix von Bern takes place Saturday, May 15, 2027, with registration open online at trackmaxx.ch; entries cost CHF 58 without a finisher medal or CHF 64 with one, and include a free round-trip Swiss public transport pass to the event.
