The Lowdown

The Königsschlösser Marathon is an annual road race held in Füssen, in the Bavarian Allgäu region of southern Germany, run as the flagship distance of the town's Füssener Lauf-Samstag ('Running Saturday') weekend alongside a Half Marathon, a Quarter Marathon (10.5 km), and children's races. The nearly flat 42.195 km loop is roughly half asphalt and half forest trail, with about 60% of the route running alongside water: it circles Lake Hopfensee, crosses the floodplain of the Lech river, and follows the eastern shore of Lake Forggensee before looping past Lake Schwansee, all with sweeping views of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. The course has only about 90 meters of total elevation gain, making it one of the flattest and most scenic marathons in Germany. Held since the early 2000s -- the 2026 running marked its 24th edition -- the race is organized by Sportstudio Füssen with title sponsor IWIS and presenting sponsor Sparkasse Allgäu, and drew roughly 1,500 finishers across its marathon, half marathon, and quarter marathon fields in 2025. Refreshment stations are set every 5 km along the route, and every finisher receives a one-way timing chip result, medal, finisher video, and access to on-site showers.
