The Lowdown

The Media Maratón de Gijón is an annual half marathon held in the coastal city of Gijón, in the Principality of Asturias on Spain's northern coast. Now in its 15th edition, the race carries the traditional subtitle "Villa de Jovellanos," honoring the 18th-century Asturian scholar Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, a native son of Gijón. From 2022 through 2026 the event has run under title sponsorship from MBA, a Gijón-based medical-surgical technology distributor, though the race's core identity and course have stayed the same across sponsor changes. Organized jointly by the Patronato Deportivo Municipal, Gijón Atletismo, and 321go, the race is officially sanctioned by the Real Federación Española de Atletismo (RFEA) and the Asturian athletics federation (FASATLE). The 21.1 km course starts and finishes near Avenida de Albert Einstein and the Complejo Deportivo de Las Mestas, and is widely regarded as flat and fast, with timing checkpoints every 5 km, making it a popular target for a personal record. The maximum official finishing time is 2 hours 30 minutes, with intermediate cutoffs at 10 km and 15 km. The 2026 edition, set for October 10, proved highly popular: its original 2,000-bib quota sold out well ahead of the registration deadline, prompting organizers to add 500 more bibs before registration closed entirely; remaining spots are now allocated through a waitlist lottery.
